The New England Revolution have announced the signing of 25 year old French striker Saer Sene from the Bayern Munich reserves. Sene is a product of the Paris Saint-Germain youth system. Sene has been playing in the German lower division for sides such as SC Schorndorf and SG Sonnenhof Großaspach since 2007. He's been with Bayern Munich II since 2009 where he's made 55 appearances and score 19 goals as well as having been called up for early round UEFA Champions League matches.
So far we are hearing good things in the reports we've heard coming out of Germany. Sene was in training camp with the Revs in Arizona on trial and that should help ease his integration into the team. Some are reading this as Moreno plan B, but I'm thinking that he's been a target all along. Sene's numbers, age and resume are far more impressive than that of Moreno's and I am actually excited about this signing. While he has had some injury issues he has rebounded from them scoring 8 goals and an assist in 16 appearances since he came back. Sene has a lot of potential and still more room to grow. Sene may not be coming from the first team, but it is nice to see the Revs signing someone from one of the best teams in the world.
Should be a great signing! I look forward to seeing him play in the league! I've heard nothing but good things!
ReplyDeleteHi Brian,
ReplyDeleteI made use of my German, and here is what surfaced so far:
On the 22th of January there was a press release that the contract between Bayern and Saer Sane was terminated by the club. Unfortunately, no more background info turned up. He played in 16 of 21 games in the current season. He also went from being a starter to being subbed out in the second to last game of the current season at minute 75 for another striker. The last season game he was not even on the bench, so hopefully he is not injury prone or has character issues.
In his 16 games, 15 starts, he scored 8 goals, 2 of which where penalties. He scored one brace, one game winner and one game tying goal.
German message boards like the guy as a player for the 2nd team, but basically see no chance to make it to the Bayern pro team, especially considering his age. Most players in the Bayern II team are under 20.
He also seems to be more at home on the right wing traditionally, but his last games for Bayern II were at central striker in a 4-2-3-1 system, which is what I assume we will have to play this year, seeing the lack at striker and the overabundance in midfield.
He seems to be a solid 4th division player in Germany, I hope you can play at a similar level in MLS, which I see closer to good 3rd division or lower level 2nd division teams in Germany.
He brings the skill set and experience, on paper not the big huge star signing, but hopefully an productive average MLS striker.
MLS: where players go to "stay fit".
