Fortgate

So as not to offend the children there will be profanity and references to profanity in this post, please act accordingly. Also in the past we have been accused of being biased and using "Fox News Tactics" so just to be clear we are an opinion site as it says on the left, think of us as an opinion source with a news problem not a news source with an opinion problem.  Also we were present in The Fort for this match, much of what we relay here was witnessed first hand.

Fred Kfhoury www.nhsoccer.com
This past Saturday as the New England Revolution took on the Chicago Fire what can only be described as a planned operation took place against the Fort (the supporters section for Revs fans) and Revolution Supporters Groups.  Gillette Stadium security, TeamOps, went about ejecting and in multiple cases having the Foxborough Police Department make arrests.  The start of all of this is from the "You suck asshole" chant that is routinely done around the league after goalkeepers take a goalkick.

In what seemed like any ordinary match day for the Revolution the supporters filled the Fort, Midnight Riders at the front of 143, The Rebellion at the front of 142 and the Rev Army taking it's usual post in the middle of 142.  Songs and chants were all done as they usually are with nothing remarkable happening, there was a pretty decent atmosphere from within the Fort.  About half way through the first half we happened to notice a stronger than usual TeamOps presence, supervisors instead of the usual "orange shirts" were regularly patrolling up an down the aisles as well as taking posts within rows.  We noticed this was odd and made note of it to people during half time.

The second half of the game begins and the Fort continues with its usual repertoire.  Monty Rodrigues, long standing former president of The Midnight Riders took up his position on the Capo stand in front of 142 to lead the Fort in it's songs and chants. Normally Monty will take this Capo stand in the first half but other than this the Fort and the game was carrying on as usual.  Getting closer to the hour mark of the game we started to notice that there were more TeamOps supervisors than usual in front of the Fort, including a woman who appeared to be a high-ranking member.  We noticed them talking back and forth with Monty and soon after a representative from the team was also present.  Fran Harrington, current Midnight Rider president, informed me that TeamOps was cracking down on swearing and the "You suck asshole" chant from the Fort.  Word was being spread through the Fort that we should all turn our backs to the field during goal kicks as a response to this.  Many people did turn their backs but word was spreading slowly and the "You suck asshole" chant continued. At around the 63rd minute after continued blame and accusations being placed on Monty for the leading and continuing of 'YSA' Monty stepped off the capo stand and left the game despite the fact that he was not doing the chant or even leading it and hadn't been all game or even over the past 2 seasons that the capo stand has existed.  At this point I and others from all the Revolution supporters groups decided to walk out of the match, the need was felt to support Monty and follow suit.  There was a lot of confusion about what was going on and as word spread more and more people continued to leave The Fort leaving it's numbers depleted and silent by the end of the match.  After Monty left there was a supporter who went to the front of The Fort to try to keep chants going, he was not there long before he was arrested.  After 20 minutes of relative silence from The Fort another individual attempted to re-ignite what few people were left and not even a minute later he was removed from The Fort.

This is where our story gets ugly.  Let's make one thing clear from here, some people are seeing the reaction of the supporters as complaining about not being allowed to swear, this is absolutely not the case.  The reaction of the supporters is to the heavy handed tactics used by TeamOps, Foxborough Police Department and the complicity with these actions from the Revolution's Front Office as well as the inconsistency of rule enforcement.

We have heard varying numbers and do not have any hard information yet but multiple sources are telling us that between 10-12 supporters were arrested and at least 20 banning orders have been issued.  As a contrast the Boston Bruins had their Stanley Cup victory parade through the streets of Boston earlier that day; there were 1.5 million people there.  There were 9 arrests. We have asked the Revolution to confirm these numbers with us. Other than Brian Bilello's comments yesterday the only response we have been given of right now we have been told that the team will be spending "a great deal of time investigating the incident and will be in touch with the supporters groups in the near future" by Lizz Summers, Director of Communications for the Revolution

One person who was arrested has gotten in touch with us, due to pending legal action we will not publish his name however he told us he was arrested for disorderly conduct.  We witnessed him being arrested and he was peacefully leaving The Fort along with many others.  He also has told us that when he was arrested by the Foxborough Police Department he was not read his Miranda Rights, when he asked he was told by the arresting officer "Fuck your rights", in addition when they ID'd him he gave his military ID to which the officer said to him "You must be in the Navy because you're acting like a pussy".  Obviously we cannot blame this directly on the team, but these actions by the Foxborough PD are appalling and the disrespect they gave to an active member of the military is shameful considering we are a nation still fighting multiple wars.  These officers may be or have been members of rival branches of the military but there is no excuse for bringing that into their job. One cannot help but think this all could have been easily avoided.

We have had sources closes to the Revolution inform us that The Revs Girls, part of the teams marketing efforts, were told that they were not allowed to be in The Fort for this match.  The Revs Girls regularly come into the section and stand, sing, chant etc. with the supporters.  This bit of information further solidifies our opinion that this was a planned operation.  Ourselves as well as others noticed an increased police presence and increased number of TeamOps personnel as previously noted and we do not believe that this could merely be a coincidence.  According to Revolution COO Brian Bilello "This was not a security issue."  So it wasn't an over-reaction by TeamOps? You were complicit and involved in a planned effort to ban and arrest your supporters? This is the nail in the coffin for us.

There is a question of whether or not a warning was issued about the "YSA" chant and other profanity.  What we know is that the Midnight Riders and The Rebellion issued a joint letter regarding The Fort a few weeks ago, included was a request not to use profane language or add to the "You Suck" chant at opposing goalkeepers...

"However the following behavior is not tolerated... Use of profane chants, such as adding language to the end of "You suck"done towards opposing goalkeepers when in front of the fort."

Does this constitute a warning that you will be, removed from the stadium, banned and arrested? Absolutely not. The FO may have asked them to help try to limit it however there was no implication that such serious actions would be taken if people did not adhere to this request. This came from the SG's not from the team.  If the team wants to start enforcing something that they have rarely if ever enforced since the teams inception 16 years ago the should have the professionalism to give fair warning themselves. This does not constitute a fair warning.

"This was related to one particular chant which our supporters' liaison has spoken to the supporter group leaders about on multiple occasions this season." -Revolution COO Brian Bilello

Ok Brian, that's great and all but why didn't you email that this chant would be a problem to your STH's? Why not come out to the tailgate and personally ask the supporters to stop doing it and assist in trying to change it? Why not make it clear by placing notes in the seats of the fort? Why not issue a statement on your website or the Revolution blog? Did you expect things to change over night after years and years of this going on? Where you afraid of the backlash if you issued a statement on profanity and the fact that the often ignored and overlooked rules on it where now going to be vigorously enforced?

Are you happy now?

Seems like all of those things might have been a bit of a better idea...

What about Joe College-Kid at his first game yelling cocksucker at opposing players? What about the fact that there were people who were sitting right next to TeamOps security calling people faggots? They weren't arrested or even thrown out.  If you enforce it for one you enforce it for all and that is not even up for debate.

Asking the leaders of the supporters groups to control and stop 'unwanted behavior' by the fans in The Fort is not fair or even a viable solution to the problem.  Not everyone in a supporters section is a member of a supporters group.  Members of supporters groups do not have blind faith in their leaders and will not obey them just because they are the leader of what in it's most basic form, is a social group.  The leaders of the supporters groups do it for the love of the sport the team and their group. This is supposed to be fun for them asking them to be the enforcers of rules is never going to work, they are not on your payroll, you should not be placing these expectations on them. The leaders of the groups serve their members and the players on the field in the form of their support and nothing else.

A week ago there were about 120-150 supporters who traveled to support the team against the New York Red Bulls.  We were encouraged by RBNY security to support our team loudly and in any way we saw fit as long as we were not making personal attacks against anyone.  We were treated with respect and dignity, there were a few situations that occurred while we were there and RBNY security went above and beyond the call of duty in dealing with the situations. They were focused on customer service despite the fact that we were away fans.  It was a similar situation when we went down to Philadelphia last year to support the team there.  It has always been that way when we go to Toronto, the ironic thing about that? TeamOps runs security in Toronto. To be treated like criminals and hooligans in our own stadium is disappointing to say the least.  This is not Green Street Hooligans.  This is not The Football Factory. We are not a firm lurking in the dark alley waiting for it to "go off".

The FO has told us in the past that they have no control over TeamOps. TeamOps is owned by the Kraft family, it is part of Kraft Sports Group (in case you need proof) just like the Revolution, to say that they have complete control and the team has no say is ridiculous. There is a long history of TeamOps' heavy handed tactics against supporters, we will have more on that later this week.

If 100 people out of the 14000 people in attendance complained about language this past Saturday that would be .07% of the fans in attendance filing complaints. I would venture to guess that there were not 100 complaints.  We have asked for copies of any complaints filed with the team but as of yet have not received an answer as to whether or not we will be provided with them.  If we are they will be posted here.  There should be an expectation that if you go to a sporting event, especially where there is alcohol served that there will be foul language, it is a part of every sport in every pro league all around the world, to think that you can avoid because it's a soccer game is ludicrous.

"I will not get into an online debate with people who may or may not have been at the stadium last night, nor will I allow this to be presented as an example of how this organization doesn't care about our fans or our supporters... Every one of our STHs show at least the same amount of loyalty and dedication to this team turning up week after week and year after year and our organization owes just as much service and response to them as we do to our STH in the fort." -Brian Bilello

Orange slices for everyone! The new face of the Revs!!
Do you use those who do not sit in the fort as the background to your website? Do you use them in your television and print advertising? Nope.  You use The Fort.  These are the people that pay for their own tifo, travel at great length and expense to support this team all over the country, create the atmosphere that is craved as a marketing tool by the teams in this league. A TeamOps staffer even had the gall to say that the flags, banners etc. that some SG members stayed behind to collect was property of the team.

These are the people who live and breathe this team.  You use them to build your brand, well I'm sorry they should matter a little more.  Instead of using them for your marketing maybe you should go and start using Sally-once-a-year-soccer-mom, because guess what... a lot of them aren't coming back.  If you ever want to have the Fort look like this you will have to do a lot to change your current ways and to patch things up with the SG's.

The number of conversations I have had in the past few day where supporters have discussed not renewing their tickets, is quite possibly too much for the Fort to survive.  Numerous supporters have stated they will not be back this season and 2 close friends of mine sent their season tickets back to the team today.

Supporters are the life behind any soccer team.  This is not a past time for these people, it is a culture, it is a way of life, the FO and many others do not seem to realize that or understand that.  The way the Midnight Riders, The Rebellion, the Rev Army and the unaffiliated supporters were treated was a direct insult, this is why we are angry this is where the problem lies.

Worse of all this has an unintended effect on the players, the ones we care about most.  They need to know that we are there for them and that what happened and will likely happen is not a reflection on them.  Rebellion co-founder Kyle Santos had this to say to us today:
"The worst part was I went to a restaurant after the game to get dinner and player came up to me and asked me what happened since they saw the entire thing unfold. I told them what happened, in all honesty and they were outraged. [T]he people who it matters to, who we support, support us and love us and by us getting disrespected it's a knock to them. After a game they don't go to section 114 and thank them..."

These events have far more implications than just in New England, this will affect every supporters group and every team in the league.  The New England Revolution have decided that planning and carrying out a planned security operation that will result in bans and arrests is an acceptable way for an MLS team to deal with its supporters, take note of this. If these keeps up, this team that is floundering in the league and needs all the support it can get will have more game that look like Wednesday's game vs. Toronto:

This team is at a crossroads, will you go for the 18-35 demographic that has driven the passion of the teams who are now in "MLS 2.0" and even stepping into "MLS 3.0" or will you continue on with the youth soccer crowd and continue to be left in the dust.  The ball is on the penalty spot put it in the back of the net or botch it Revs, it's up to you how you carry forward from here.

Finally in a showing of the good work that these supporter groups so selflessly do we'd like to share this with you:

The Midnight Riders will be holding a trivia night on July 11 at The Pour House in Boston. All money raised will be donated to the Prescott family for the continuing care of their daughter Sam.

Below is a letter we received from family friend, and fellow Revs fan, Greg Gomes:

I write this letter on behalf of a dear friend of mine. For the past six years I have had the privilege of being a soccer referee, one of my colleges who I h
ave refereed more than 50 games with has had some recent family troubles. Mike Prescott, has a young daughter Sam, she is 15 years old and was a fabulous soccer player when on the field for the FC Stars of Massachusetts. Sam was truly going to develop her skills into what could have been one of the best players that Central Massachusetts has seen in a long time.

Sam started her October off like any other year, Northbridge had just finished up their soccer season and Sam was on the Varsity girl’s team, she then started practice with the FC Stars, and began refereeing at the same facility myself and her father Mike ref at. While refereeing one game same started to become ill, suffering from a seizure. Test after test and Sam remained her fun, outgoing self, just "plugging" along with the procedures.

To her dismay the Dr's had no explanation why she was having these seizures. Time had passed and Sam had begun to suffer from seizures again and she also suffered from extreme fatigue. A new Dr, and finally Sam had been diagnosed with an illness. Unfortunately for Sam it was terminal brain cancer. Again Sam is only 15 years old. I hope this letter will help the Midnight Riders with their event and I thank you for your time in reading this.

  3. Well said. I'm a 16 year sth and am thinking about bailing too. I sit next to the Fort and have no issues with the language but would be happy to see it cleaned up. I am outraged by the overreaction by the FO/TO. If you don't approve of the Fort then don't use it to market the team. There's more passion at my daughter's U8 games than in the non-Fort sections. Again horrible pathetic treatment of some of your FEW fans.

  4. Brian,
A strong statement that rings true among many supporters. Anyone, who feels the atmosphere at Gillette for a REAL FOOTBALL game should match that of a Disney on Ice Show has no business EVER touching a round 32 panel ball...
I am one of the people that has been banned from the Revolution Facebook Page because I DID make this issue into a Kraft doesn't give 2 $hits about the game.
You hit it right on the head and even though I wasn't even there, I know how these team ops stare with a condescending attitude towards fans who file in. Not as sporting fans who are eager to support a league and GAME, but as the multitude of bashers who mock and ridicule anyone who's interest for this sport gets SPIRITED!!! This is the legacy of 16 awful years of Kraft ownership of the Revolution and it finally reared it's ugly head on Saturday night. Had I been at the game instead of at a graduation party, I may have been arrested also. I cannot keep quiet when I know someone is trying to use force to bully and coerce any individual, especially THOSE WHO SUPPORT THE BEAUTIFUL GAME!!!
Saturday Night was a SLAP at the FANS, the TEAM, the LEAGUE and the Beautiful GAME..!!

  7. Brian, great post. Obviously I fully agree. I was furious that they decided to come after me first when I was not doing any swearing, and I even made it a point before the capo stand to ask people to knock it off and sing louder ... and the response by quite a few non-supporters was to swear more. But somehow myself and the supporter's groups are liable for that. Amazing. I've been coming for 16 years. I've been to more Revs games home and away than anyone else that proudly wears the Revs colors. I've helped purchase over 10,000 tickets from this club over these years. And I'm this close to sending back my tickets and telling them thanks ... but no...

  9. I don't live in the New England area, but I have been to my fair share of games there since 1996. The security / police in the area have always seemed to be very alert, and very quick to arrest folks versus having a conversation. (I remember the tailgate arrests at MLS Cup *sigh*)

Agree that a change in policy enforcement should be very clearly communicated with explicit statements from management.

I am dismayed to hear that Monty was accused of purposely leading the profanity (I do not believe that for a minute - leading a chant, yes - AFTER asking folks to NOT add profanity, I know he would not) and I applaud him for stepping back and leaving. Sometimes silent protest is the only alternative.

Regarding the issue about the use of profanity by those that are using it: 1] use of foul language is specifically prohibited in most stadiums and can legally be used as a reason to eject folks, especially when it is used in unison by a number of people (that is called 'organized' even if no ONE person actually organized it). The occasional word thrown out in disgust or emotion by one person is typically not a problem. 2] do not try using the 'freedom of speech' defense with them. Profanity is explicitly excluded in the supreme court's opinion, as is yelling 'fire' (*snicker *snort) in a movie theater.

Go Revs - here's hoping for a quick, reasonable resolution

  10. Chiming in from Los Angeles, I can totally feel for you guys we to in section 121 have had dirty underhanded tactics used on us to try and knock us down a peg, so I know were you are coming from. I hope you guys can sort thing's out with your F.O. A supporter movement has begun and the F.O.'s or security for that matter have taken notice and feel that they need to have the upper hand. Stay positive. You have the Angelino's Support

  11. I was at the recent home game versus the LA Galaxy....the atmosphere in the stands was pathetic (attendance was something like 25K - Maybe more b/c of donovan, beckham, etc..) Small talk and unrelated side chatter completely drowned out the game ...the Fort was the only area of the stadium with any energy whatsoever. Much respect to the the good fans who have stuck with this team...MLS 1.0 is a too polite way to describe them .....NE Revolution soccer is utterly miserable to watch from this fans perspective...I've seen mi-season high school games way more engaging and entertaining that the crap I witnessed on (and also off) the field that night.

  12. I am a member of a Supporter Group and do some times use a little more colorful language to express my displeasure of an opposing team/ goalie/ ref. I don't see any problems with a little language at all and I hope you people can work it out with your FO. A couple times people have said some thing about the language and I remind them they are at a football match not church.

  13. Any sports team would be lucky to have a guy like Monty as a visible and passionate supporter and opinion leader. To single him out when he was trying to do the right thing is one of the biggest outrages of all of this.

  15. I'm an LA Fan and a member of the Angel City Brigade. I just want to say that a lot of us caught this article and are outraged at the tactics used by your front office.

This is a very important issue. If they are able to silence you and whip you into obedience then other stadiums might follow suit. We can't have that in the MLS. It's not hard for the front office to designate a family section (ie: complainers section)far away from the supporter sections. Some stadiums already have this in place.

On behalf of Supporter Groups all over the MLS, please do not back down or compromise with such stupid policing. I wish you the best in your battle. Stick to your guns and never given in!

This attempt to turn the MLS into the AYSO is offensive and needs to be squashed.

  17. Well written Brian.

As President of the Midnight Riders I would like to thank all the fans from around the league for the showing of solidarity. It is very much appreciated.

We will be in touch with the TDIF guys about the planned meeting between the members of the fort and the Revs FO and hopefully a representative of Team Ops.

  18. What are 'fox news tactics' and how do they differ from benevolent news programs such as CNN or msnbc? or is that just another typical ad hoc attack on programs that hold (assumed) different opinions than that of your own? I guess the word for that is irony...

  21. Not a member of any supporters groups (no teams near enough to me to regularly attend matches) but I'm in agreement that the whole situation is bullshit. It still amazes me how prudish this country can be about certain things. Can't swear in public, but we can show explicit violence on TV. Ooooh, we don't want you to swear because the kids might hear it! Please, they hear things 10x worse in the school hallways. Like someone said earlier, you're at a sporting event, not church. You have to expect activity like that when attending sporting events. If you don't like it, stay home and watch it on TV. That's one more seat for a TRUE supporter.

  23. Would love to hear FO's answer to the fact that "YSA" is not the only profane chant we use. What about "Wings of a Sparrow", "From the Halls of Foxboro Stadium", "Woah, New England", and others? Do they not want us singing those as well?

  24. I'm not even sure I want to be a Revs fan anymore.

  25. Hold The Fort indeed! Language can be cleaned up and it sometimes goes too far, but FO treatment of loyal fans, in deference to soccer moms, is unthinkable without a rebellion. Nothing necessarily wrong with kids and their parents, but America doesn't yet get it. I can't imagine if Kraft were in Seattle or Portland. They'd have to bring in the military. Hang in folks. MLS, the Revs, and all other teams/supporters groups need you even if they don't know it. Well written Brian. Hope to meet you someday.

    Another Rapids lunatic.

  26. Timber Army STH here,

That is some serious shit right there!

I hate the YSA chant, I'm glad we were forced to remove it 3 or 4 years ago. The chant is great in a bush league game, but when it's the ONLY chant you hear from a supporters group on the telecast it sounds stupid/immature...20,000 people yelling YSA every-freakin-goalkick... just degrades their professionalism/respect.

That being said, the FO was extremely helpful in communicating with the TA ... offering incentives (smoke bombs, 2-stix, in-stadium storage, etc) in exchange for shoring up the obscene language. I mean we still swear, but not to the extremes of YSA....Arresting people for language is just mental.

I haven't researched anything yet regarding the TA, I just saw your story and was linked in from a friends twitter acct. This is the first I have heard of this incident... which really pisses me off more at the Extratime radio podcast, as I just listened to it and of course there was no mention of this..(I will leave those jokers for another rant ..) BUT, in regards to the TA, I hope that the members of our various supporters sections can do something to show that this type of action will not go unnoticed! (Disclaimer: I hold no position with the TA). A few members within the TA took a stand against the incident that happened to the Fire Supports a few years ago. But, unfortunately the TImbers are on the road this week... and as time passes fuel fades...

This article was a great read. I hope the FO comes out and issues a public apology for poorly handling this entire issue.

It is not worth much, but you have my support!! haha

  28. MLS Cup 2009 was an eye opener for the NE Rev faithful. To see a NFL stadium with proper football signage, with the ownership actually interested in the activities of the round football. To see A LOCAL GROUP PURCHASE LIVERPOOL and to be treated the way they have, is shameful, and in the single-entity that is MLS should be looked down upon by all other ownership groups.

  31. Team Ops and the supervisors are a joke. What they did last Saturday night was a disgrace. I remember an incident a few years ago when there was an event with a team from Mexico. A group of fans from that tam sat behind us and began to swear in Spanish. I don't speak the language but my son recognized a few of the words. Hey, since they were swearing in a different language, no big deal. When they started to spill beers on us, different story. Asked them to knock it off and almost got into a fight. Called security and as I was telling TeamOps what was going on, I noticed one of the tickets and these guys were supposed to be sitting in the end zone and not in our section. I told TO about that and asked them to be removed. The answer..."Well, they are not really hurting anyone by sitting here. Why don't you just relax and enjoy the game"? WHAT? I hit the roof. I demanded a supervisor and laid into him about what had happened. After speaking with the supervisor, he went over to speak with the other TO crew and then they removed those fans. The supervisor came over and apologized for his crew and then said to me, "we have to be tolerate of all when we have these international matches". To which I replied; "I'm extremely tolerate. Tolerance lasts when beer gets spilled on your family and they offer no apology. Tolerance lasts when security is incompetent to the point when they cannot or refuse to perform their job"

  35. We had this same problem for our NASL team in Tampa, FL last year. The chant "you suck a** hole" did it to us to. The security acted like they would kick our entire section out of the game. We no longer use that chant even at a new stadium we are at this year. We debated if we should not attend a game or protest but we felt bad leaving the players during the game. As fans & supporters it puts you in a tough place. I hope you can work it out with the front office and security at your field. We actually had to get a meeting with our Front Office to work things out with us.

  36. I went to my first MLS game first kick last year. I purchased the 4 pack, and sat somewhere along side-lines. It sucked, the passion was missing. I noticed a raucous section at the end line and I wanted to sit there. By the second half of the second game I went to I was hooked on the Fort. If not for the Fort I would still be watching the EPL.

I want to thank Monty and the other Capos for teaching me how a football game should be enjoyed.

  37. I swear this is like something out of the movie Major League. Management doesn't give a crap as evidenced by their apathy year after year after year and they're afraid they're being shown up by those in the Fort.

Management's latest war against its few fans is the last straw for me. This is beyond ridiculous. I'm becoming a Montreal supporter next year. I don't take this decision lightly. It's not even about a crappy team in a crappy stadium in a crappy location with a crappy atmosphere. I can deal with that and have. It's about waging war against those who are at least trying to improve the crappy atmosphere a tiny bit. You people in the Fort deserve praise not arrest.

The FO doesn't want people like me as a fan. Mission accomplished!

  38. Forget the Refs, I say the chant gets changed to "Major League Soccer, Minor League Ownership". But on second thought, that just might get me arrested...

I can only say so much before I just end up echoing the comments made by Brian in this most excellent post, as well as the many others who have commented already (MANY thanks to the members of other team's SG's who have shown their support for us - cheers to all).

I was unable to attend the game on Saturday, but after hearing first-hand views about everything that happened, well, that could just be the final straw. From the tail-spin decline of this team, on the field for the past 3+ years and counting, as well as the absentee ownership for 16 years and counting, to the straight-up deplorable events that happened on Saturday, it really is heartbreaking to see this team, the one sports team that I fantatically grew up with, crumble to its lowest point ever. And I could see it possibly not recovering.

I will most likely be present at the 7/17 game vs Philly. I will (now reluctantly) pay $20 to partake in the 90 seconds of silence (hopefully word goes out to the players about the beforehand, so they know that it's not showing disrespect to them). After that, I may very well not come back until this team is either out of Gillette or wholesale changes are made from top to bottom, be it personnel and/or overall philosophy.

By the way, I was also, once upon a time, one of those kids who regularly attended games as a STH with my parents (I was still only 13 when the league started - how the hell else would I have gotten to Foxboro?), and we were never turned away from any sort of foul language heard here and there throughout the stadium. It's a sporting event for crying out loud!

To Brian Bilello and whoever else in the FO was behind this sting op - to alienate the die-hard supporters who you've always talked up and commended, as well as used as marketing tools for this team, is downright terrible. And you should be ashamed of yourself.

To the Krafts - Step up or step out. Get a F'ing clue.

    ReplyDelete
  39. It's truly too bad that the Revs have fallen this far down. I was at MLS Cup '02 when the stadium was packed, I've been there for National Team matches as well. To Alienate the Fort is ridiculous, these are the only people who consistantly support the team, buy merch (annually, not once in a while), travel to away matches, and try to make an atmosphere.

I'd sorry to say, either get new ownership or move. The Krafts obviously don't care, or they'd find another venue to play in somewhere. Hell partner with a university for the time being. It's a shame to see the crowds in NE. I know a lot of the NE fans personally from going to the World Cup, going to WC Qualifiers, and other matches. They support all levels of footie and to pander to the wrong crowd is why this team looks as awful as it is.

  40. I'm not a fan of YSA. Not because of the language but because I just think it is not very creative. I would love for my SOB's to come up with something better or even more profane. But for a FO to piss off its most ardent supporters is pretty short sited. Suggestion, though boycotting may be the knee jerk reaction how about some very loud, very profane anti-Kraft chants during a goal kick

    ReplyDelete
  41. It's been a while since I've gone to a game due to a lot of life changes and events. I am going to the Manchester United game and have been spending the last several years telling my husband how fun the atmopshere at a game is, esp. in the Fort with the supporters. I could not wait to go and now that my finances are in better shape, planned on going to even more games next season, standing in the fort for all.
One of my biggest pet peeves though, speaking as a woman, is people who expect the world to change for their kids. Honestly, people, your kid is hearing worse than YSA on the playground at school and worse still at other sporting events. Someone mentioned people were calling people "faggots". To me, that is a word said in pure bigotry and hate. Whereas YSA is just a longstanding silly tradition no one takes seriously. Why weren't the "faggot" people arrested? Do you think the soccer moms and their 11 year olds are coming to game after game? No. They will go once, maybe twice. They probably aren't sitting in the fort. And as I've said before, if your kid can't handle the occasional cuss word, then best to never leave your house. Esp. not to go to a major league game in any sport. Ever go to a hockey game? I have. Language was far worse. No one cared. The fun atmosphere and unity of supporters groups and passion for the game is what makes going to soccer matches different and more fun. I am still in shock at how the biggest and most loyal fans were treated.

Ugly situation. Keep your heads up - Your passion and your honour will guide you.

  43. Recently-joined Midnight Rider, here, who's never been a big fan of the YSA chant. This is clearly bigger than all of that though - I'd be happy to leave YSA behind, but the way that this has been handled is absurd. It's got to be addressed. I don't know how, because I feel like it's a deeper issue, it's bigger than this one incident. It's how the FO approaches the Revs, and the game of soccer. Maybe this will be some kind of turning point. Probably not, but I can hope.

That being said, I can't blame the team for the administration's problems. The Revs are my team, and as long as they exist, they will be. This idea that I'd stop supporting them because of their management … I can't abide by that. Even when they frustrate me, and when they fail miserably, they're my team.

This battle is between the true supporters and the Front Office/TeamOps, not between the supporters and the team/players. And from Kyle's quote, it seems like the players might be more on our side than theirs. This fight is almost as much for their sake as ours - just as the supporters deserve to have a great experience supporting our team at home, so does the team deserve to have the benefit of the home crowd's support.

To be clear: my tickets aren't in the Fort. But I was on that bus to NYRB Arena, and I saw the difference an administration can make in the experience. I saw the support we got from security, and how seriously the whole thing was taken there. And I'm quite jealous. New England deserves better, and the Revs deserve better.

I also appreciate all the support from the other SGs out there. Great stuff.

  45. As a TFC supporter here I say stay strong Revs supporters!! You have our support!

    ReplyDelete
  46. The Fort definitely has support from a member of the Texian Army down here in Houston. This is an absolute outrage and just baffles my mind. The Revs seem to be bleeding fans, and to alienate the ONLY positive thing going in the stands is just beyond me. Is this purposely being done to get rid of the team? I hope not. The Revs and the SG, and even the causl fan, definitely deserve better

    ReplyDelete
  47. This seems very counterproductive on management's part. It should be clear to every team owner that the supporter groups drive attendance in the long run. Even those who don't participate enjoy the atmosphere created by the supporter groups. This is a severe overreaction, and I hope you can get the attention of the club.

Take care, and keep up the good fight. Cheers from Portland!

  52. Nice write up TDFI crew. Yet another shot in the long war we've had since 1996 with the Foxboro PD, State Police, and mostly Team Ops but this is particularly disheartening. We've had police escorts INTO the stadium, attempts to enforce "no ticket no tailgating" in NON stadium lots, state trooper "gang enforcement unit" coming down to take pictures of us and "document" tattoos, small "screw yous" in blocking off passage ways and foot path to the point of lining the path with yellow jackets, multiple comments from the gents at team ops on their disdain for the sport and having to work a "pussy sport", being told I would have my "head fucking bounced" unless I moved along, invading the stands at old Foxboro to separate the SG, being tossed for standing on a metal bench, being harassed by TO for drinking drinks SOLD BY THE VENDORS because they didn't recognize the cup, it goes on and on. I'd imagine the riders and now the rebellion have a list of experiences in addition to the small sample from the rev army's time at Foxboro. The events listed here I don't think really had much to do with the FO which is why the events you guys describe from Saturday are even more discouraging and suspect. At a point where fans are looking for reason to COME, despite the shit team, shit management, shit moves, shit front office, shit promotion, shit location, shit stadium, this makes it even harder and is a huge step backwards for the revs, us supporters and supporter culture in general. Team Ops has ALWAYS been and WILL ALWAYS be our enemy. The FO didn't have to be. We aren't there for the front office, kraft, nicol, sylde, some half dead eastern European or whoever else, we are only there for the red and the blue. Same as it's always been our colors have never changed so I guess it shouldn't be a surprise it's still the same old front office. It is still disappointing that the hard work put in building the support/FO partnership by Evan, Monty and many others meant shit to the FO. Culture change is not an overnight affair but we have stopped doing songs that lived there life and that took time. And if I can get bombarded with emails that I can get advanced tickets to tobey keith or some other psuedo redneck concert I'm sure it was in the budget, even for the Oliver twist-esque revs, to send an email. Crack down instead of collaboration? If your goal was to set an example then you have accomplished that; you have given us an example of an organization that can never be trusted or truly be a partner. You have benefited all other teams in the league who can now learn from your example on how to destroy supporter relations. Petition the Foxboro PD to drop the charges, lift your banning orders and issue a statement with at least some level of taking responsibility.

  53. As a supporter for Sporting KC, I've seen some dark days. Playing in Arrowhead Stadium, even bigger than Gillette, was like playing in a concrete canyon. When Lamar Hunt put the team up for sale in December 2004 and the rumors started about which city the team would move to. Arrowhead security (referred to as "lettuce" for the green shirts they wore) acting like they were God's gift to law enforcement.

We've been there, done that. I would agree that the Revs deserve better ownership. Once OnGoal purchased the team in 2006, things started to improve at Arrowhead. Moving to Community America Ballpark (2008-10) was a bit rough at times, but it was bearable because we knew a stadium was coming. We even knocked down a mall at one point (even though we ended up getting the stadium built elsewhere).

We, as a fan base, endured the tough times to get to where we are now, playing in the palace known as LIVESTRONG Sporting Park. It's the stadium we've been waiting for for 16 years.

As the saying goes, that which does not kill you only makes you stronger. Hang in there. You'll be all right. Support the team (they need you) and know that better days will come.

  54. i send my support to the fort. we are in this together. it is our time to let mls higher ups know who pays their bills.

  55. New member of the riders here. I was at the midweek game vs Toronto, and even though, numbers were low in the fort, I did notice a few more of those yellow shirted guys than usual. There were also more people in white shirts as well at the entrance of the fort. (i also over heard them complaining about having to be there and not wanting to deal with any shit, but thats for another day) They probably chose not to "strike" that day and wanted to wait for a bigger crowd in order to make their point loud and clear.

I was unable to attend the chicago game, but from what I read (and saw in the video posted of a revs supporter getting cuffed and called a dick head) I can only come to the conclusion that this was a calculated attack by Team ops and FPD. The reason they decided to do this now was because the next home game for the revs is vs united, which will be a pretty visible game from a local and national point of view. They know alot of casual fans of the game will come just because manchester is in town and the higher ups think that this is a good time to showcase that the revolution as a whole is a good time, family fun, orange slices for all event. In order to accomplish this, they felt the actions at the chicago game were in order. well i got news for the revs management. I hope they're ready to handle the united fans, because I can guarantee the word "asshole" will be nicest thing being chanted from their supporters. I'll be at that game, sitting in the fort, supporting my club, but at the same time keeping an eye on the double standard that probably will occur in regard to team ops and united supporters.

    thanks,

    antonio

p.s. i know i'm no higher up in the SG's, but if i can propose something, seeing as this will be a visible game in terms of local media coverage and attendance, maybe the SG's can get together and form some sort of protest for this game instead of the next MLS regular season game. Dress all in blank? 90 seconds of silence at the 60 minute mark marked with upside down revs crest?

Solidarity from a Portland STH. Cheers.

    ReplyDelete
  61. That's just sad. I've seen something similar happen at Dynamo games in years past but things have been patched up since then. Heck, the SGs were signing "F*** You Dallas" at the home game a bit back over and over again.

NE FO should be ashamed of themselves for ambushing their most ardent, passionate supporters. Fight the good fight, brothers!

  62. Michael Breton here from L.A.

I first met Monty when I attended the Midnight Riders' Supporters Summit in '99, stood with him in the Fort, he's a stand up guy & wouldn't jeopardize things for supporters. I believe what I've read here & feel it's a primary issue for this yrs Summit, to be raised in either the Security or FO/Supporters relations arena. It's disturbing that some feel a league wide crackdown is emerging. I've never felt vulgarities are useful 'cause I'm more of a Supporter, than an insulter, but I've lost my composure over a ref or three. And I've endured FO's you'd swear don't give a... & security that's overreacted. But it's football's forward progress that's important. These are growing pains. We should consider solutions rather than statements of outrage. Football's progress, with examples like Fortgate, are occasionally babysteps-yet progress is happening-from expansion to stadiums etc. I wouldn't blame a boycott, but you know you'll be back 'cause supporting our side, our sport is what we live for. Get past the hurt, squeeze out solutions & bring them to the Summit. It's precisely where I envisioned these things being discussed when I founded the Summit in L.A. back in '98. I'll give Monty the floor, or whomever he suggests to address the issue with the League, his teams FO (we must invite them, if they say no - that'll say alot) or an Operations rep. It's the proper way - constructively - in the proper forum - the Supporters Summit. Be strong, build the game, it needs us... be there in November.

  63. great article. even in salt lake city we don't get arrested for speaking our minds. they have a family friendly section with no beer and swearing - that seems to appease the soccer moms while allowing the rest of the universe to act normally.

    ReplyDelete
  64. support from Vancouver! we've had our own minor troubles with our FO but they pale in comparison to this. Support the Fort!

    ReplyDelete
  65. What were people supposedly arrested for? Someone mentioned one person being arrested for disorderly conduct. Were the other people arrests or were they protective custodies? Last time I checked there was no law against swearing. Also I am no fan of TeamOps myself, but at the end of the day its bob's stadium and his rules. If he doesn't want swearing in his house, he can ask you to leave. The few times I have been to games, the only time I saw police interact with fans was after security had called them over to do sobriety checks on intoxicated fans.

I think having a cheering section is a great idea. I just wish there were more fans there to cheer. If the stadium was full, there would be no way to hear one person swearing.

  66. Brian, excellent article. Sounders fan here. The Revs are now my second favorite team. Here's hoping you win all your matches except against us. The Krafts need to go away forever. As passionate supporters you were shown a massive amount of disrespect. You should be respected and not treated like crap. All Revs supporters should be highly offended by this terrible injustice. Go Revs!!!!

(As a side note the Sounder players and the competition hates the fieldturf at the Seattle stadium. Please suppport us in getting grass! Feel free to go to the Sounders Forum to voice your opinion. Mike Holmgren wanted FieldTurf. Everybody else hates it!).

    ReplyDelete
  69. As one of those soccer moms and season ticket holders, I am really glad you wrote this blog. First of all, it is well written and quite thoughtful. Secondly, it helps me learn about what really is happening in the fort which we can't be a part of because of our young children. I don’t resent the fort because of the profane chants. Some places are meant for kids and some are not. When they grow up, we will bring em on over.

As far as the chants go, our kids understand that "things said at Revs games stay at Revs games" and our attempt to tell them that "you suck asshole" was really "you suck at goal" only worked for a week. I do wish that it were cleaner at times because we have friends who won’t come because of the language. At the same time, the language is equally bad a Red Sox and Pats games and even worse at Bruins games.

I love that the fort travels with the team. I think that management must keep that in mind when they try to change the group. I hope that you all can reach some sort of a resolution so that we can keep our most spirited fans in the stands.

Most importantly, we need to find a way to lift the spirits of our team. It has been a really rough few weeks. I am hoping that some spark gets us moving towards a better season.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I am a season ticket holder who always brings my young kids with me to the games. Quite honestly, we are so consumed with watching the game that we don't pay much attention to the words in the chants. I have no problem with the use of profanity in the chants, as you are going to hear this at any sports event you ever attend. There is no way to avoid it. What is more important to me is overall safety, which is never really an issue at Gillette Stadium (unlike many stadiums in Europe). I don't want to have to worry about flying objects, motor scooters on fire dangling from the balconies, fighting, and other nonsense like that which is commonplace in other countries. I would love to see some more creative chants though as the YSA chant is very lame and I think we could come up with more creative chants than that.

  75. If you don't think fans blindly follow the leader, then you have a lot to learn about social psychology. I, too, don't think arrests are a proper response to fans routinely chanting curses at opponents; arrests should be reserved for violation of the prevailing law. Instead, I think game forfeiture would be in order. One warning, swift action, done. It would stop REAL quick. No matter how many arguments you think up to justify this behavior, it is clearly and simply poor sportsmanship - and a VERY poor example for impressionable youth. I sat next to a 5 or 6 year old fan who yelled out "Fail! Fail! You suck!" to the opposing goalkeeper, then turned to his father and said "Right Dad? He sucks, right Dad?" The father said "Yep." The goalkeeper was highly skilled and ignored the chants; he was a far better example of good sportsmanship for the kid than his own father, let alone the chanters. I wasn't the least bit upset that we lost. We teach our children to support our team, but to be respectful toward the opponents and refs - no "auto hate" in our family. Sports is a reflection of life, and chanters are basically exemplifying hatred of opponents in all situations, whether they can admit it or not. Get over yourselves and start respecting the opponents - without them, you wouldn't have a match to begin with. (Love of the game, my ass!)

  79. I think the anonymous post on December 7th (the first one) might be the best thing ever. While we're teaching our kids to be respectful to everyone we should also teach them that winning isn't important! Woo!

    ReplyDelete
  80. My question is why are we even still talking about this? Bilello made mistakes and (to my understanding) some rogue fans who may or may not have been affiliated with the supports groups and chose not to follow the rules were ejected and, in one or two cases, arrested. It's over, it's done, I'd like to start looking forward to a new and better season next year and not bring this crap up again. The only thing I'll say for now in response to the anonymous post on the 7th is that as long as the kids know only to say it at the game and not to say it at school etc then it is ok. Like you said the goalkeepers aren't phased by this shit. They know it happens and I'm guilty of it just as I'm sure other hardcore Revs fans are. It's a way to vent frustrations and have fun. SO many people engage in this and aren't jerks outside of the game. For example, I proudly flipped off David Beckham last May at the Galaxy game and respect him and his career and am not that type of person in real life. It was just fun to show not only my support for the Revs but to let Beckham know that in that moment he was the enemy!
